4 Effective Fighting Techniques That Every Man Should Know

You cannot say that you are a man if you cannot fight. As simple as that. If you fight better, you incidentally become a better man. People would say that nowadays, in the era of cameras, guns, safe spaces, and “muh feelings,” hand-to-hand to combat is obsolete. I could not disagree more.

Fighting is needed in this day and age more than ever before. By being exposed to this real violence, you become slowly impervious to it. You can distance yourself from it, think in a clearer manner and act accordingly. You learn that you are not fragile and that when someone strikes you, you strike right back.

I have fought most of my life, learned different arts and used many techniques. But nothing is as efficient as perfectly mastered, simple techniques. Today, I will share with you what I consider the most useful tools in the box.

The hand techniques

We will focus here on the upper limbs, in a situation of unarmed combat. I have a limited experience in the “soft” arts such as Tai Chi and Qui Gong so this series uses techniques coming from the “hard” arts.

Disclaimer : These are suggestions to add to your training sessions. You must practice regularly and under the supervision of a qualified teacher.

1. The lead hand pull and back hand strike

hqdefault

I find this technique more effective against an opponent using a southpaw stance. The important element is surprise.

high-grab-03

1.Starting from both the opponents having their guard up. Use the power of your lead hand to bring the opponent towards you, knocking him off balance. You can grab his lead wrist, the back of his fist or his sleeve if he has any.

2.Simultaneously, your back hand comes closer to strike with a cross or a hook. The force of impact is multiplied as you are not hitting a motionless target, but one that meets your fist by moving straight in its direction.

3. You must act fast as you also have your lead hand occupied. The movement can be completed by pulling the opponent’s hand downwards or by side-stepping to his “weak” side (towards his back and shoulders) and take advantage of this position.

2. The palm heel strike

Sensei Demura demonstrates the palm heel strike, while pulling on his opponent’s belt in order to maximize the strength of impact.

This move is effective and simple to use, but it is usually proscribed in a competitive environment as it can damage the bones of the face easily or cause severe damage. It reduces your risks of knuckle and wrist injuries compared to a regular closed-fist punch, when the articulations are cold for instance.

palm

1. Where the fist is like a stone traveling in the air, the palm heel strike uses the supports of the radius and cubit (ulna) bone.

palm2

It would feel more like a spear or the end of a stick that uses a thrusting strike.

Palm-strike-3-1

2. The technique is usually a counter-attack movement used after entering the guard of the opponent, by blocking or deflecting his blow. The targets are usually the chin (see image), the nose or the throat when the strike is performed in a straigh line. When you use the palm heel as a hook, aim at the temple, the chin or the neck.

As the close-combat authority William E. Fairbairn illustrates in his book Get Tough!, you can complete the technique by gouging the eyes of your opponent.

3. The ear slap from waist level

Ear-Slap-to-Takedown-2

NOTE: This is a self defense move. This strike usually results in the perforation of the ear drum.

Perforated ear drum caused by an ear slap

An alternative is to hit the zone of the chin and jaw.

anatomical_position1317003355963

1. As it is a self-defense situation, the key is to use suprise. You have to strike before the opponent has the time to raise his fists. When confronted, open the palms next to your waist, asking “What did I do?” to distract your target.

2. Strength is not the main element if you aim at the ear. Speed and precision as the palm must land flat on the ear, perforating the era drum with the sudden pressure.

2. Turn your whole body as you strike. Strength is not the main element. Speed and precision are, as the palm must land flat on the ear, perforating the ear drum with the sudden pressure. The arm must not be locked extended to avoid elbow injury and allow greater speed.

3. If you do not want to perforate any ear drums, the alternative is to use all the weight of the body and strike the jaw of the opponent with the radius bone.

A powerful slap is sometimes sufficient to knock out or disorientate someone caught off guard.

4. The upward elbow block and elbow strike

4573512608_121d111e1f_z1

This move has been popularized by the introduction of Muay Thai to Westerners. It can be executed in one or two steps, depending of the distance that separates you from the opponent

elbow block

1. Having your fists raised, pass your palm on your head as if you were using an invisible comb. This should be done while moving one step forward, to parry an incoming hook or to strike directly the chin of your opponent if you get close enough.

elbow-muay-thai-clinch

2. The aim of the move is to hit the chin or the nose of the opponent from under. The big inconvenience of this move is that it leaves the ribcage exposed while it is performed.

If you missed, you can follow up by using a close range horizontal elbow strike. You should turn your entire body, starting from the back foot, to use maximum power.

If you missed, you can follow up by using a close range horizontal elbow strike. You should turn your entire body, starting from the back foot, to use maximum power.

Au travail!

Now it is time to bring those ideas to the dojo and learn them. They should be practiced once a week. There is no “minimum length” or “end” of practice. I am not telling you how to take antibiotics.

The human body comes with lower limbs even more powerful than the upper ones! Stay tuned for Part II where I will share with you the right techniques to kick your way to victory.

  1. Qigong exercises are good for this stuff though. It loosens and strengthens the joints, makes your body move in a more integral way.
You know how they say not to telegraph your strike? Qigong trains that – it trains you to start any movement from the abdominals, and the movement rolls out in a wave to the end of your limbs.

        1. Yeah it was because Harrison Ford has caught Dysentery while filming. The script called for him to fight they guy with the sword; but Ford was so exhausted he asked if he could shoot the scene a different way. That’s when he did the famous thing where he just shoots the guy, and they kept it.

    1. very shortsighted, you wont always have a gun
Also there are numerous benefits to unarmed combat other than protecting yourself
myself personally i would have more respect and admiration for a lethal unarmed combatant than any man with a gun.

  2. The first technique in this article reminds me of Pac Sao from kung fu. The difference being that the lead hand punches and the rear hand pushes the opponent’s lead hand down and out of the way.

They’re doing it pretty fast here but just look at the initial attack. It’s a simultaneous trap and strike.

    1. In Kung fu, it would be called a Cao Sao. But is generally not used as an intial move. If you pull some one in and they know what they’re doing, it would be like pulling the fox into the hen house.

  3. Just to add some tips:
    1. Against trained opponents, a pull forward can be surprising (but it will put you in closer proximity if done effectively, this has its own drawbacks). However, an upward push of the arm opens up full side vulnerabilities and allows you to close distance with the opponent while he is at a striking/countering disadvantage. A downward push followed by a forward pull opens the head to strikes/kicks, the legs to sweeps, and the body to prone position. Paired with proper hand, finger, and wrist locks, these put you in at an almost guaranteed advantage.
    2. Always aim and strike as if you were intending to strike a target 3-4″ behind your opponent. Release on the exhale and put your hips into it.
    3. Keep the hand open and tight until it leaves your “space” then close it before entering his space and impacting on your opponent (adds speed and power without allowing for the natural vulnerabilities an open hand strike has against hand, finger, and wrist-locking techniques, etc.).
    4. Disorienting an opponent by striking the ear may also be accomplished by a backhand strike (and may be done for greater effect to both ears simultaneously). Just above the bridge of the nose (or the outside ridge of the eye socket) is also an apt target.
    5. Rotating one’s arm outward and upward while blocking/deflecting a straight strike and stepping forward allows for a more damaging downward elbow to land in the vulnerable center (including the skull) of the opponent. Pair with a strike with your opposite hand and one leg to different points, and you raise your potential to land something through his defense even higher.
    Good article.

    1. Another point I might add in is to learn “destructions”. We practice these in JKD occasionally. Basically you have your arms higher up like in muay thai. When your opponent comes in with a punch, you direct the punch into your forearm just above the elbow. You’re essentially elbow striking their punch which hurts like hell at slow speeds so at full power they will probably break their wrist. You can do the same if they have grabbed you and are trying to knee you in the face. Just keep elbowing their thighs as they come up.

      1. Intercepting fist. Yep.
You can also strike as they strike, except you aim for their wrist or inner elbow/bicep. Kick their shin or inner knee or groin. Basically any vulnerable muscle, joint, or pressure point to weaken their ability to attack or defend further. (Follow it with an elbow break and down and in twist while punching into their armpit to completely debilitate).
Then there are catches: grip their heel as they kick and lift upward or drag forward. Twist the foot outward (or towards the shin and then outward). Catch their fist and twist (counter-clockwise from your perspective). You can also directly punch (or kick) their oncoming fist/foot.
Alternate between targets so as not to become predictable, but punish the areas you land as much and as many times as possible.

        1. “You can also strike as they strike, except you aim for their wrist or inner elbow/bicep.”
Yep, gunting is what it’s called. The basic gunting method is parrying the punch with one hand while striking the wrist, forearm, or armpit with the other. You make a natural scissor motion that really increases the devastation done to the opponent. Gunting is trained open-handed, but in reality, you would be using a knife in the striking hand to slice the wrist or arm.

        2. Having JKD in the repertoire is always handy.
Back in the late 60s/early 70s, my father added a form taught to him as “Defendo,” by a fellow Marine, to our family style. Now I’ve since Googled it and it is not what comes back in searches. The gist however was in how to lock the finger, hand, wrist etc. against any open fist strike. The man who “invented” it only really took some of the best techniques from many other styles and combined them into a singular focus on quick response quick debilitation.
I’d like to share one with you (though you may know it already): the idea is to intercept the hand on either the pinkie or pointer finger edge, then to wrap your pointer and index around their two closest fingers so that yours are now wedged downward in the middle/between their four fingers and up against the joint at their hand (this can also be done by “splitting” their strike with your own), then twist at whatever angle is most unnatural for that series of knuckle joints while pushing the wrist either back into the forearm underneath or above and bringing your opposing hand up to their elbow (if outside) or throat (if stepped inside).

        3. Similar to this (arrow one is direction of force, two is the direction of twist in this instance, sorry if the pic is bad but it’s the best I could do artistically, it’s been passed along in my family and I don’t currently have possession of our book) also you likely won’t be able to do it well enough to yourself to get any more than a general idea of the pain it inflicts:

        4. It is.
With this you pressure the wrist, up or down (as shown), use your fulcrum to spread his fingers apart (which is painful, especially if on the last two fingers instead of first, you can break the fingers, bring up your other hand and “pull the wishbone,” and by positioning your other two fingers over the top of his reposition the hold as needed to the as of yet unafflicted digits, alternate between push and drag, wrap his own arm around his neck to choke him out, or advance into another maneuver (like an elbow break, an arm-bar, or a take-down).

        5. Sounds fun. I really enjoy the subtleties of Aikido as even a small movement can illicit a big response. I’m still a fledgling in Aikido (green belt), but I am already starting to see the power of it when properly utilized. My instructor can send you for a ride, slinging you from one direction to the next, and you’ll be completely helpless to resist. It’s trickier than more direct styles like Taekwondo, but it’s very enlightening.

        6. I have searched and searched in the past to see if anything like it was on the net, this is the closest (he only uses some of the techniques and not the one I shared, though every one he does do I can confirm works), and the hand techniques start at about the 36-37 second mark. PS you may want to mute the music:

        7. Every finger is a target! Usually ten of them, an a broken one is painful enough to end the fight

        8. This is very true.
          I was trained:
          1. Everything is a target, the important thing is to recognize any opening and fully exploit it.
          2. The mind is your greatest weapon, but anything at hand can become one.
          3. There are no rules in a true fight, do what it takes to put them down quickly to minimize risk to yourself.

  4. Does anyone here experienced with martial arts have any thoughts on Keysi?
Also I’m a smaller dude, what is the best fighting style for me? Perhaps one of the Filipino styles?

    1. Filipino Kali works well for shorter people since they fight lower to the ground that more traditional styles like karate, muay thai, taekwondo. You might look into supplementing with some Aikido as well since their main focus is performing the techniques with minimal effort, focusing instead on finding the natural mechanical weaknesses in the body.

    2. I second Aikido as Unabashed says. Also look into others that use your opponent’s size and strength to his disadvantage: Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Tai Chi Chuan, Piquaquan, Bajiquan, Hung Gar, Hapkido, etc.

        1. Some branches of Aikido have strikes mostly as distraction moves to setup locks or controls or to strike vital points (atemi). Yoshinkan uses many edge of the palm strikes. But the Yoshinkan has always been closer to the Daitou Ryu a Pre WWII roots, not this granola “harmony an peace” bull shit

        2. We don’t focus on the strikes mainly because our instructor wants us to focus on making the technique work based on its own merit and not due to us having to distract our opponent. It’s not that they’re not allowed per se, he just wants us to get good at the actual technique and then we can add “embellishments.”

        3. It’s degrees and based on the level of commitment your opponent puts into their attack. Fully committed, strike is not required, non-commital probing attacks, it is necessary.
Atemi is no embellishment, and it is unfortunate that it has been dropped by so many aikido schools and so misunderstood.

        4. Perhaps I wasn’t describing our schools approach very well. I agree with what you said above and using attacks for distraction is an option at our school but typically we focus on trying to perform the technique with minimal effort. If a partner locks down and resists then we might use a light kick to the leg or something to that effect to disrupt their focus.

      1. Sorry did you just say you “use an opponents size and strength to his disadvantage”? No opponent with a modicum of ability will let this happen. Size and strength is a major ADVANTAGE (shock me) and thinking you can use it against someone that you arent vastly more skilled than is lunacy. So much nonsense on the internet from people who have watched too many movies.

        1. Of course they are advantages; considering most people cannot simply “grow taller or broader” you can add muscle mass certainly and should but courage and biceps only go so far especially against a trained/experienced opponent. In general fighting at a disadvantage (such as being smaller) should be avoided, but when that isn’t possible the only real hope is to have the expertise to turn your opponents advantages against him and play to whatever your strengths may be.
The entire point would be to learn (to the degree of becoming vastly more skilled than when you began obviously) a martial art that focuses on leverage and the fact that human physiology simply cannot bend certain ways and certain impacts illicit mostly autonomous reactions.
It’s both amazing and sad that I would have to spell that out considering you clearly understand that it would require vast skill, which is generally acquired by training thoroughly (or managing to survive several real fights, for instance).
As for the last, I feel no need to get into a virtual pissing contest and I could say this or that about myself (none of which would mean anything as you will never know me and neither of us will ever care), but don’t you find it a tad juvenile and futile to make these kind of assertions?
This will be my only response to you on the subject, so good day.

        2. Giving false hope is not a good thing, it will end up in weak and inexperienced guys committing to a fight that it would better they ran from.
If you absolutely must fight someone bigger and stronger then your best chance is to do as much damage as you can before the fight has started and their guard is up, and then capitalise on that by finishing them (dont let them recover) or escaping. That means punching them in the throat while they are still talking shit and before they have worked up to hitting you, most guys need while to do this so there’s plenty of time.

    3. The best fighting sport for a small guy? No such thing. GET BIGGER. There is a reason the greatest boxers in the world can go up 15kg of weight divisions before they can do nothing. Forget all the “bigger they are harder they fall” bullshit. If you don’t land a DECISIVE nut punch against the bigger guys or find and use a weapon, you will lose ESPECIALLY if it turns to grapple/wrestle. There is no way to learn this but FIGHTING which no martial art will teach you. I am lucky in that I was one of three boys and my father made us fight until blood and tears every day for 15 years. If you have never been in real fight then I’m sorry but thinking you will do well with any amount of synthetic preparation is a fantasy at best.

      1. Understood that one has to put muscle on and gain strength, but I’m not going to get any taller and if I put on 50lbs of muscle I’d still barely be touching 200. Obviously different fighting styles are better for different body types like you said re: grappling/wrestling.
Your dad made you fight until blood was drawn? It sounds like a worse version of The Great Santini!
I know what your saying RE: once the first punch is thrown, but I think some training can be helpful.

  5. The art of fighting without fighting: I’ve ended a lot of fights quickly using the eye gouge. The single most effective blow using the least amount of energy/training.

  6. if i fight a shorter or lighter guy, i go for grappling. If i fight a guy more even to my physique, i palm or elbow to the face, and punch only the ribs.
Against a fat guy its best to stick and move, you aint goin toe to toe with those meat hooks.

  7. My gym recently added a small boxing area. I’ve never boxed or formally learned any martial art. I was watching this one big black guy built like a football player wail on the punching bag, when it hit me how much damage a man can do if he wants. If I came across this guy in a dark alley, he could probably do whatever he wanted, take my wallet, bloody my face, even give me a good ole rapin’.
It is only lately that women have been given political and legal power. When you consider the character of most women, their lack of logic, reason, compassion and empathy, we are really fortunate that we are the stronger gender. Consider the amount of destruction and damage the average feminist wants to do to society, and take comfort in the fact that they are limited, even today, in exercising that power.
Female on male domestic violence is almost unheard of, but the stats show it occurs about half as much as male to female. That’s a huge number when you consider how difficult it is for most women to physically damage a man. Can you imagine what they would do if they were stronger and dominant?

    1. Indeed. Brute force is the foundation for all other powers. I’m sure there’s a pyramid, similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs but for types of power instead, out there. As we move up the pyramid, the power becomes more delicate and superficial. If someone cannot achieve their means through a higher tier level of power, they must drop down to a lower one.
What I’m getting at is raw physical power will always be the international, base currency that everyone understands even if they don’t ever use it. These feminists know this and also know they will never be able to match a man’s ferocity if provoked. Instead they are trying to leash men using higher tiers of power (emotions such as guilt, legalities, norms, etc). In the end, these forms of power can only be backed up by the men who support them. If the system were to collapse, the women would be helpless and reliant on the men to do what we were designed to do best.

      1. Late-stage Western feminism ends where neo-tribal warfare begins.
Let’s try to stay away from both. Exercise your right to vote, clean up your yard, treat everybody with respect.

      2. One of the nice things about possessing raw physical power is knowing that you can kick the ass of that arrogant public schoolboy banker any time you like.
And yes I have done this.

      3. A large part of women’s games and manipulations in getting men to do stuff for them stems from what you guys are talking about. When it comes to arguing with a mechanic, fixing a sink, dealing with exes, etc. They use us as avatars. Also revealing why so many of them are into dogs. They manipulate our minds to take advantage of our physical strength and intelligence. So many bright intelligence guys get sucked into this and do the most stupid things on behalf of pussy.

    2. Well their approach to life is due to the fact that they are smaller and less dominant. It reflects their weakness. And so it makes sense for a woman to beg, plead and whine because this is how she accumulates resources. A man gets them by fighting for them.
Consider the constant feminization of society. They were saying that boxing should be banned because some guy just got injured (in a coma). Nobody made the important point: this man knew the risks (as do all of us in the pugilist arts) and he decided they were worth taking. That is a man’s decision and a man’s decision alone. It is not for “society” to decide if you will fight or not.
More to the point. Learning to fight, toughens you, makes you a man, capable of defending your family. Only a weak man would want to stop other men from learning to fight. They think that they become safer by stopping other men from fighting. Pussies. You become less safe because now you cannot defend yourself from the jackals in society.

      1. Agreed; however, I was thinking that a man, more often than not, *refrains* from fighting for things. We civilize and calm ourselves. Where the woman seems to exaggerate her power, twisting and manipulating and multiplying it.

    3. Took up MMA last month. Training’s a bitch ! But hey at least I’m spending time with guys that are trying to better themselves and lets not forget the most imporant par – MMA CAGE TRAINING ! YEAH !
Or how would you americans say it -,, Come at me bro ! ”

    4. Ex-Domestic Violence Court employee here. . .Most male/female violence is started by the women. When it gets out of their control they call the cops. There’s even a syndrome of serial dv abusers that most cities know by name: Women who go frrom relationship to relationship getting beaten up SO they can call the cops and create drama.
Looking into history; female run nations were extinquished one after the other because they went crazy attacking neighbors and violating treaties and mores in their regions. They’d start a war, and didn’t know how to fight one, then get wiped out to maintain order within given regions. Bigger powers would give them a chance, yeah. But as a rule they were deemed to dangerous to common peace to be let survive. Commentators from ancient times noted that the wars they’d start didn’t have to do with land or defense; they would just start them for the sake of bloodshed and destruction with no goal in sight. Note modern women: They haven’t changed in 5000 years.

      1. Hah, what are some examples of these female run nations? I firmly believe your experience above. You know, FX is doing a really good series on the OJ Simpson trial and I’ve been watching it and reading the books written by all the major players, because it’s an interesting example of the manipulation of the legal system.
OJ’s book “If I Did It” (the audio version is amazing) shows a whole bunch of shit that his ex-wife did. Of course Simpson is clearly an out of control violent man, no one deserves to be murdered, and I would never justify a permanent and immoral act like killing, but when you see his side of the story, that no one has ever rebutted, she had a lot of manipulative, slutty, and out of control behavior, and kept injecting herself into his life after she made him divorce, and at the end of several chapters of him describing all of her actions, one can understand how he lost his temper and flew off the handle.
I don’t think he intended to hurt her, it was a moment of passion sort of thing. The reaction can be both understood and condemned, just as the reaction made by the Saudi hijackers to strike back against America after they violated Islamic holy land and intervened in their way of life can be both understood and condemned. The bottom line is, if you keep fucking with someone’s feelings, emotions, and way of life, eventually they will do something serious about it.

        1. Yup. Women themselves will tell you that women can’t let something go. Give them a list of what you’re ex is doing and they’ll tell you what the manipulation is she’s pulling. After divorces they’re the ones who keep up the warfare and torment the guy. Women file restraint orders, and then are the ones who violate them over and over. Usually when a guy violates an order it’s because the woman has been contacting him or stalking him, giving him the idea that she wants contact. Then when he calls to say he’s on his way over, she has the cops waiting there for him. Cops and courts fucking know this shit, but they have to follow the line.
In all my time at the court, it was always betas, run into the psychological gutter, who were the guys screwed over. You never saw alphas in court dealing with the drama/b.s. White knights would show up for assault cases when they got manipulated by the women to intervene. And man, when those WK cases were over, we just laughed and made fun of the jackasses, having gone through that and not getting any pussy to boot.

    5. That’s unnerving.
You know, once I had a girl hit me with a belt. She was 6’4″. It was different than I think you mean, though.

    6. Tell that to my neighbor! He came over one night because his “lady” stabbed both his hands with a steak knife. Defensive wounds. His mistake, letting her find out he was horn dogging all over town.

    7. ive heard female on male domestic violence is actually higher, but male on female domestic violence results in more hospital visits. plus men are not likely to call the police when his wife or girlfriend slapps him.

  8. Hello, Jean-Batave!
Which martial art would you recommend for someone who wants to learn to fight/defend himself in the streets if necessary?

    1. I would not recommend to start a martial art with that in mind. Street fights have no rules and more than one out there died, trying to show off his moves.
If you want to be efficient in fighting however, the key would not be which style but which teacher. There is an excellent article on ROK called “How To Spot A Mc Dojo/Belt Factory” I think
In my personnal experience, Combat Sambo, boxing and BJJ are the ones I practiced where I noticed great improvement after practicing Judo for a long time and Chinese Kempo.
In my opinion the best would be something that teaches both grappling and striking like MMA or Sambo
I have heard excellent things on Systema and Krav-Maga for the non-competitive aspect.
      Final word
      Strikes only: 1.Boxing 2.Muay Thai/Lethwei 3.Krav Maga
      Grappling only : 1.Wrestling 2.BJJ 3.Judo

  9. I’m just laughing at the absurdity of this dumb article. If you want to be good at defending yourself: 1)Be in good athletic shape, 2)Learn a grappling art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Wrestling, and 3)Learn boxing. It’s simple as that. All this voodo dim mak bullshit is nothing but blue pill propaganda.

    1. More than one way to skin a cat. The more tools you have at your disposal, the better prepared you are for any situation. If you want to train in just BJJ and boxing, so be it, but don’t knock others for finding a style that works for them.

      1. Boxing gives you much more than punches, it gives you a good delivery system, which he is not talking about at all.

        1. I’m not bashing boxing at all. I’m merely pointing out the level of ignorance he’s thrown out here that BJJ & boxing is all you need and works for anyone.
What about an older man who uses a cane to walk around? Are you seriously going to suggest he train in boxing and BJJ to defend himself? Hell no.

        2. Exactly. The softer styles get a bunch of shit but if you are an old man, the ability to move fluidly and cripple an amount trumps the ability to live off of strength you no longer have. The MMA culture has every non fighter looking to kill the culture with shortcuts based off of the words of one or two experts. A drop of water cannot begin to fathom the depth of an ocean.

        3. I don’t see any cane tactics mentioned in this article. It’s only talking about main hand-to-hand combat scenarios. With your logic, I might as well say that always carry a gun. Saves you the trouble.

        4. Are we to cover every single technique known to man? We really want to go into all this? The article is “4 Effective Fighting Techniques That Every Man Should Know”, not “The ONLY 4 Techniques You Need to Know” or some nonsense like that.
You missed the point entirely that I was making. Your original post implied that every man, regardless of circumstance, just needs to learn boxing and BJJ and they’ll be set. That’s ignorant keyboard warrior behavior that won’t get much traction around here.

    2. You sir, are the cousin of the keyboard commando: you are the keyboard fighter.

    1. And if you see a guy with a blade, just run as you had the hell in your ass. Bourne’s movies are nothing but that: movies.

        1. 0 % accurate. No one who has used a knife for more than 15 minutes in his life would lose a prolonged fight against a fully naked vulnerable opponent who is relaxing in the sauna; the naked guy should have instantly gone for lethal spots like the neck, eyes etc. to stand any chance of winning against 2 fully dressed knife fighters… Scenes like this are on a par with women physically beating men up in movies, it’s an insult to the audience’s intelligence…

        2. Agreed fully.
On top of that, movies never depict the fact that a knife cuts whatever soft target it contacts, you don’t even have to go for obvious vitals with these direct stabs they show (especially against a naked person). Cutting/stabbing/slicing his hand, finger, thigh, arm etc. will cause excruciating pain and likely open up easier strikes to vitals.

        3. True, but I got the sense that those guys weren’t exactly determined opponents. Each of them was just hoping the other would finish him off, and they were just doing it so that they could say they avenged their brother. It’s an unlikely scenario, engaging a man one at a time like that, but it lines up with how cowardly a lot of criminals are.

        4. Of course not. But not everyone is as big of a psychopath as they like to pretend, and I can see someone pussying out on a vendetta killing. You have to pretend to want someone dead in that case just for honor.
Besides, that’s just saying how it would have gone down. Within the context of the setup it isn’t unlikely, but the setup is not a typical scenario. I’m just saying that it was as well done as you can expect, and this was pretty much the only fighting scene in the whole movie.
          This was no ‘John Wick.’

      1. If you can’t run, find a big object to throw at him or hit him with. Or use your gun.

        1. I had a fight in a down town liquor bar with locals that didn’t appreciate my company. There were 8 of them and when one ran at me with a knife, I kicked it our of his hand and then moved to one side and propelled him into the wall, where he was knocked out and slid down the wall. An Elk’s head that was above him fell down and finished the job, but it left me with 7 others.
They circled me in the bar and when one went to punch me, I ducked and he punched his buddy opposite. It was a sucker punch and knocked him clean cold. So it was down to 6 v1.
Two ran up to me from behind, and i did a double flick punch over my shoulders, they were dazed but standing, and so when another ran at me from the front I used them for support to kick up with both feet into the mans head. When my feet landed back on the ground, I then grabbed the dazed two’s heads and flipped them over onto the floor. It left 3v1.
The first came forward in classic boxing pose and we fist fighted – street style – until he went for a swinging punch, that I ducked and then knocked him out with an Upper Cut.
The last two then respectfully stepped forward. One did the ceremonial bow of karate and the other of Ju Jitsu. I bowed to each. And then we fought.
I started in Tiger stance, hitting aside each of their kicks and punches until they were weary. I did a flying kick into one and knocked him over the bar, where the bar girl then crashed a whisky bottle over his head.
Clinching a moment the other foe, grabbed an old oar off the wall and broke off the paddles to fight me ‘oriental staff style’, just as Monkey always did. I looked around and no staff or oar to be seen, fate had dealt me unfair duel it seemed. But the bar girl then threw me a staff from behind the bar. We fought Monkey Staff Style for five minutes before finally, using the staff in pole vault style I jumped across the room and kicked him out of the window.
The locals applauded me, as I later found out that they had been terrorising the locals for a long time.

        2. Those older movies were THE BEST! The ones from the early 1990’s made by diversifying porn makers were good too. These days not so good.

      2. EXACTLY. gouge eyes, reverse their knee by kicking it in, and/or pull a pistol to dump the mag into them with. Street fights are how you get stabbed and die from bile entering your bloodstream after cholo ran off. Who fights fair after the sun goes down?

        1. Yeap. Street fights are about winning, not about being fair. And the first thing is that you’re not gonna know you’re into one until too late. A guy with a blade is not gonna make a choreographic position two meters from you like he was in a movie, he’s gonna get very close while arguing and then he’s gonna stab you before you even know he had a blade.

      3. Best advice. Our sensei advised run, but if you can’t and have to fight, accept that you’re going to get cut and calm down. Then you’re more level headed and not freaking out trying NOT to get cut. You can then focus mental energy on fighting just enough to escape. Better to have a cut on your arm or shoulder than the throat or getting a vital organ.

    2. Excellent reference friend. Fighting is not always sport. Sometimes it’s the only way to deal with an attack.

    3. Exactly. Street fighting has no rules except the last man standing wins. Forget squaring off and immediately go (viciously) for the throat, groin, eyes, etc.

    4. Didn’t the first UFC only ban eye gouges, fish hooks, and groin attacks? I guess the had to make it family friendly to get it legalized in more states.

  11. Been thinking on this for a long time now, and i want ROK brothers to advise me: What martial art should i study?

      1. You are right, my fault. I am looking for something that can inflict damage enough on a eventual fight, the ones that can occur anytime, anywhere.
Something that can allow me to defend on the most casual events like against someone who grabs my arms or neck, how to defend myself against someone that is bigger than me. Like krav maga or on that line of thinking.

        1. I have no formal training in Krav Maga so I cannot give you advice on that.
-Jeet Kune Do is a good style that encompasses nearly all facets of a fight.
-Filipino Kali is also pretty good, but focuses more on you having an escrima or knife.
-Aikido would be a good supplemental style to train in as it really focuses on disrupting your opponent’s center of gravity and helps you get a solid understanding of body mechanics.
-Taekwondo on its own is not ideal, but is good to help teach you to deliver strong kicks as well as improve your footwork.

        2. Muay Thai if you are okay with kicking, Arnis (aka Kali), Sambo, Hapkido, Wing Chun/JKD, Hung Ga and Goju-ryu (which also balances hard and soft).
If you want something more in the “locking” styles then perhaps Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, or Qinna/Taijiquan (or its complimentary styles Baguazhang and Xing Yi Quan which is good for the above list too as it focuses on short-range and overwhelming the opponent).
Krav Maga is also a good starting point.

    1. About 90% of martial arts schools these days are fake and it is difficult to tell the real ones from the fake ones. Shop around all of the ones in your area and do your homework. Don’t pay attention to the style, pay attention to the instructor. There are real karate schools and fake krav maga schools out there and vice versa. Trust your gut.

  12. 5. Hammer fist
    6. Double-handed face shove (allows you to get a lot of power)
    7. Elbow upper-cut

  13. Hmmm… Yeah. Men do need to know how to defend themselves and others, though as a Christian man, one is to be weary of this.
A man should know at least basic self-defense moves and tactics but not to overly engage into physical combat but to restrain and put down an assault…
Yeah, I’m cautious on this because the Word of the Lord says for a man of Faith not to be a “brawler” or one that “striketh with his fists (hands)”. Though in real-time interactions of real life when a (Christian) man gets into a fight to defend himself and others, we could say he fights back to the point of subduing his opponent with as little injury as he can prevent; and then repents for his “violence”.
Either way, the Christian response for a man is to pray (if he can) before getting into a fight and pray throughout (if he can).
I’ve been in fights as a young kid but the Lord has blessed me greatly not to have really gotten into a serious fight with any man or woman that could have been a threat. Glory be to God.
I hope everyone’s doing okay though. Amen.

    1. A brawler is someone who goes out and looks for fights. Most people here look to train in case the need to defend themselves arises. Big difference. I’m a Christian and I see no contradiction in maintaining my faith and training in martial arts. Jesus also said to sell your robe and buy a sword. Proper context means a lot.

      1. Outstanding. One of the issues with modern Christians is this virtue of helplessness.

        1. One of many “virtues” that get taught but would have confused most Christians before 1900.
Ironically, strength is the one virtue approved by God and the devil.

      2. This comment reflects my view….. My fear, what I train for and hope will never happen, is that one day it will be down to me and over like-minded men to literally and physically defend the Church.

        1. I hearf this saying a while back and live by it since then: the warrior seldom draws his sword, but always keeps it sharp

      3. I agree with the definition you’ve provided on who a “brawler” is. That’s right.
I understand this article’s intent is for men looking to train and self-defend themselves; not to go out looking for fights.
Here’s the tricky part: “I’m a Christian and I see no contradiction in maintaining my faith and training in martial arts.”
Actually, according to the Word of God (KJV) there is a contradiction for the Christian man/woman of Faith to be training in martial arts. As a kid growing up I loved to practice and pretend-fight in martial arts, but as I got older and when I really was led by the Lord DEEPER into my faith He pointed out some of the “worldly things” I was interested in went against Him. Please see this on “martial arts” it’s the “way of the heathen” as it’s called: http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/False%20Religions/Other%20Pagan%20Mumbo-Jumbo/feng_shui.htm
On this: “Jesus also said to sell your robe and buy a sword. Proper context means a lot.”
In that instance, our Lord Jesus Christ was giving instructions to His close-knit group of “the twelve (then eleven b/c “Judas Iscariot’s betrayal”)” in telling them that. The “context” of that Scripture is not meant to be taken as a permission to “act on violence”, even for self-defense.
        Please check these out:

        __________
I’d break it down and say it’s “okay” to physically defend yourself as long as you are the “defender” and NOT the “aggressor” purposely assaulting another person.
At the end of the ordeal, prayer of repentance to the Lord Jesus Christ puts it all to a final end.
That’s how I go about it; should a situation for me go that far. Amen.

  14. I guarantee you my man in that last photo was asleep shortly after that picture was taken.

  15. Good tips Jean-Batave.
“You cannot say that you are a man if you cannot fight” is a universal truth, but sadly must be reminded to every man every day.
Remember this in every street fight: be brutal, be merciless, fight dirty and dont wait for the cops.

    1. “Every handbook on self-defense should have at least one diagram of how to ass-whoop a Nazi.”
      Whatever you say, yarmulke boy.

  16. Great article for self improvement. As men age self defense skills become very important as they become more tempting targets. Boxing skills with some self defense techniques as would be taught to a woman combined with good physical conditioning I think would be very effective. Along with a concealed carry license

  17. Just two cents…
Read anything you can get your hands on by Geoff Thompson, a doorman from the UK primarily because he shines the brightest about what happens BEFORE a confrontation. It’s usually not a complete surprise attack, and he does the best job of just about anybody describing how violence actually happens and how to avoid it.

  18. Despite being basic and somewhat accessible for the untrained, this has WAY TOO much technical stuff, to be considered an “every man should know” topic.
You know what number 1 should be, on a mans “if I need to get into a fight” list? Learn and get used to taking a hit square in the face and be able to keep going.
Number 2? Learn and get used to getting the wind knocked out of you and be able to keep going.
Number 3? Learn and get used to being tackled to the ground and how to minimize injury during the fall and be able to keep going.
After all that, basic balance, basic foot work, learn to protect your head from strikes and how to land, EFFECTIVE, BASIC, hand strikes, without hurting yourself. Basically, keep your reflexes up to a amateur sport level, on the flip side, “desk jockey” reflexes are the surest way to a get a thumpin’.
You don’t need to be Jean Claude Van Damme or Tony Jaa to win a fight, these days, against the current crop of metrosexusal men that use hand slapping as their opening strike.
The only way a regular guy, that is only equipped with the above items I mentioned, will lose in a straight up fight, is if the person he is fighting does amateur MMA, Boxing, Greco-Roman Wrestling, trains daily or outweighs him by 30+ pounds of muscle (and tackles him to ground, pounding him while pinned).
Nobody really gets into fights anymore, as kids, just older guys later in life, that join gyms and playfight, after work, because they think MMA is cool.

    1. Perfectly put. Getting your center back after being struck is paramount. I also encourage basic fighting techniques like throwing a good jab or simple combo without breaking your fingers.

    2. it’s true you gotta be able to take a lick. but one thing is, if you’ve ever been in a street fight your adrenaline is pumping so high that honestly you don’t even feel the punches during a fight…unless somebody just lands a clean haymaker on you.
but man oh man…do you feel every last single punch about 15 minutes after the fight.

    3. again, physical fighting is how you lose teeth or die from getting stabbed. Carry a pistol and smoke fucking fools, end of story. Street fights are for neanderthals these days. You will never see a fair 1-1 street fight, you’ll get attacked by some clown and his friends, sucker punched, mobbed by drunk females, etc. long before a fair 1-1 fight. When does a soldier even fight hand-to-hand with an enemy? When out of ammo & overrun, trying to bash brains in with a helmet or knife butt? Fighting & trying to glamorize it in average life is right there with lifted bro trucks and tats, for the young & stupid.

      1. It would seem to make sense to just carry a pistol and smoke fools; but honestly… in most places if you pull out your pistol and smoke a fool in a street fight situation, you’re going to prison. As opposed to most likely just taking an ass whoopin’ at worst. The very vast majority of street fights do not involve knives. Pulling out even a knife ups the charge to “assault with a deadly weapon” automatically.

        1. Watch some liveleak/bestgore, many an idiot in a street fight dies after fighting a knife wielding dickhead. Id rather discharge some lead and leave the scene, then play my odds.

        2. Where do you live? My guess it must be America.
You know what, I would be the happiest if I could do what you suggest in my country* too, but here if the cops catch you with a firearm, you go down for like 10 years in prison….
          *not America

    4. No one said it would be a walk in the park to learn them. “No one really gets into fights anymore” Eastern Europe disagrees.

  19. Some comments:
    1) I would advise against trying to catch the punch. A good striker, boxer, karateka or short fist boxer will retract their arm too fast to catch it. With the edge of the palm intercept at the forearm and let your hand slide down to where the wrist meets the base base of the hand. Most importantly, move off his line of attack first.
    2) have to keep the shoulder down of the striking arm, or it will be too weak, you will not be able to use the full force of your body. Keep the lats engaged, and strike upward with a straight arm below your opponents sight line, and he will not see it coming. Irimi tsuki is a classic tried and true aikido self defense technique, it is one of my staples
    3) Good advice
    4) I don’t use elbow strikes that much, so can’t really comment.
    Great article.

    1. Thanks man. A tually the first technique is more effective when the opponent has his guard up and his lead arm to close to you. It should be done before he strikes, in thee break when the fighters gauge each other

    1. Good for you. The more you push yourself, the better you’ll feel. It’s a self reinforcing loop.

      1. Definitely. Went for a hike the other day as well, not done that in years.

  20. I agree with the first three techniques. Have never used the 4th one. I believe an article on throwing correct punches and basic combos would be more beneficial. The first technique should come with a warning.

    1. Could be an idea. This piece is mainly directed at people who know the basics

  21. Just like most discussion about fighting by nerds on the internet, this article is mainly bullshit. If you’d ever been in real street fights you’d know as much; these techniques are next to useless.
Most street fights happen when you’re intoxicated, the is guy is bigger than you, or has more mates. People who start fights do so with people that they’re confident they will beat.
Go down to your local boxing gym. Not the Mcboxing gym that has little blonde girls pretending to punch a bag with some sleazy trainer standing behind her with his hands on her waist. Go to the one that is full of men covered in sweat, that stinks like men and sweat, that has a raggedy ring with 2 blokes beating the shit out of each other in it. You’ll know when you find this place.
Pay the fee (a real place will be dirt cheap) and put your head down and hit the bags for a few months, copy the exercises others are doing and train hard. When they see you’re serious and not dreamer that drops out after a week or two you’ll get to go in the ring find out how much you cant fight. You will get beaten badly by people better than you. You’ll leave with broken noses, split eyes, bruised ribs and ego. This is also a test to see if you’ll drop out but getting the shit beaten out of you is THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU WILL LEARN. learn what your pathetic punches do against people 30kg heavier than you. Learn how hard a guy 30kg heavier than you can hit you. Learn what it feels like to get hit in the face and drop over onto your arse and GET BACK UP.
Karate and most fantasy martial arts do NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO TAKE PUNCH DELIVERED IN EARNEST. I’ve seen countless “black belts” annihilated in street fights, and the best street fighters are not bruce lee wannabe kung fu experts but big nasty cunts with scary crazy inside of them and a face thats taken a beating. And they are NOT undefeated, they have been belted and can take a belting.
Reading special techniques on the internet with pictures will NOT teach you anything. You can not ‘catch’ a punch or deflect it midair in most cases. And by the way most fights start with the guy hitting you.

    1. Agreed… while I have never been in a street fight where I had a chance to win (and therefore always opted for either distraction or deflection), the military training in hand-to-hand combat that I have gone through very much emphasised the capability of taking punches without cowering or losing your head — together with a small set of simple techniques to hurt your opponent and make him lose balance.

      1. Exactly, being able to take a punch without losing your guts and composure (during which time you can take several more) is the most important thing you can learn to survive in a streetfight. Hence many internal boxing comps within military service.

      1. That makes no fucking sense, you don’t choose when to fight and you can’t always just “not fight” when you’re out. You have clearly NEVER been in a street fight champ.

        1. “”You have clearly NEVER been in a street fight champ.””
As a matter of fact I have. Multiple times actually.

    2. “I’ve seen countless “black belts” annihilated in street fights, and the
best street fighters are not bruce lee wannabe kung fu experts but big
nasty cunts with scary crazy inside of them and a face thats taken a
beating. And they are NOT undefeated, they have been belted and can take
      a belting.”
      Give me some examples…….

      1. I don’t video tape real life, if you don’t believe me and want proof then what you really want/need is life experience. Life is not a movie where the short lithe guy in a suit beats up the 150kg islander, get over it.

        1. “”Life is not a movie where the short lithe guy in a suit beats up the 150kg islander, get over it.””
I never said it was jackass!!

    3. Did you somehow think that a single article will teach someone how to fight, lad?

    4. You’re right about boxing. It will also teach you just how clumsy and slow and unbalanced you really are, when you first start moving around that boxing ring with someone who knows what he’s doing. It’s a humbling experience!

    5. Eff I’m trying to find this local, affordable gym (even a gym with a punching bag would suffice) but it is impossible here in Edmonton.

    6. You are more right than most people will ever know.
BTW Uncle Adolf of Germany gave the same advice to the youth: learn boxing.
Believe it or not, I have arrived to the same conclusion, went in search of a boxing gym, found one.
One of the best decisions in my life was that.
As for fighting, street fighting, self-defence and what not? I am fucking praying to God that I will never have to hold my own on the street or in the nightclub or in a war, in any real life situation.
This is not an adventure. Not a fucking film in which you are the hero and only others can bleed and die…

      1. Filipino Martial Arts ,so kali, eskrima, arnis the name changes depending what region you are in.

  22. I’m so pleased you covered elbows, my favourite upper body self-defense strike. That said, don’t feel constrained to just the upwards strike. My favourite is actually the downwards strike. Harder to see coming and provides you with more protection.

  23. Forearm strikes also are quite effective. I learned this in Choy Li Fut and southern Chinese martial arts training.

  24. Fighting is rarely, if ever worth it. Between possible injury and legal
ramifications, a single fight can ruin lives. Your best bet is to not fight, and if you’re forced
to, fight dirty. Go for the knees, go for the eyes, go for the throat
    and the balls. Fights
aren’t about winning or losing, or about who’s toughest, they’re about
survival. There is only one rule: Do more damage than you take.

  25. I prefer the walk softly & pull Browning Hi Power technique…much less studious.

  26. The 15-second video with guy getting one slap to the face to drive him unconscious really startled me. The victim was standing passively with his hands in his pockets and the fall to the concrete probably did more damage than the slap.
I always keep a spring-assisted blade (Kershaw 1835TBLKST Kuro Tanto Folding Knife) in my right pocket and when I am ever in an uneasy situation I keep my left hand free and my right hand casually in my pocket. However, if I was not expecting that slap there is no way I could have deflected it simply because of its speed.
Just for curiosity’s sake, I wish I knew what they were discussing to aggravate such an attack.

    1. It was shot in Russia. They are having the universal “watcha lookin at? I fack yu up” drunk argument.

  27. Gonna chime in here about NOT going for the balls. Womens classes teach that because it energizes their angry undercurrent about taking out a man. But the balls have to be practically hanging out and hit at the correct angle to take a guy down. I’ve been and seen guys hit in the nuts and kept on fighting. Now, you can get advantage by jamming your hand down the front of his pants and going for them; it’ll freak him out and he’ll flail around. That actually happened to Henry Rollins. One of our black belts pointed out that if you want to hit a guy in the nuts or kick him in the head, get him on the ground first and then do it.

  28. Another technique I’ve heard described is to grab an ear and pull on it hard. It’s supposed to be very painful and disorienting. I was in a confrontation once with a guy who was taller than I am and who was inches from my face, yelling down at me. I remained calm and in a non-threatening posture with my arms down but ready to go. When I figured the moment was right, and without betraying my intent with any other body movement, I suddenly swung my right arm up and landed the palm of my hand on his left ear. My plan was to grab his ear and pull down to the ground with my full body weight, but instead the force of the impact of my swing connecting with his ear knocked him onto his ass before I could close my grip. He didn’t feel like fighting back so it ended there (fortunately). I noticed when I connected with his ear during that brief moment that it felt greasy, which makes me wonder if it would have been too slippery to hold onto. Anyone here have any experience with this technique?

    1. Yes I do. The move is done less as a slap, and more like a jab, in more of a darting fashion. Also the hand is shaped like the palm strike move in #2 but the focus is not to strike with the heel of the hand, but to connect the claws of the hand behind the opponent’s ear. A very nasty move.

  29. The most basic move every man should know is the straight punch. It isn’t fancy and is effective. “Of course I know how to throw a punch!” I hear you saying, but there is indeed a correct way and an incorrect way to punch something, most people seem to do it incorrectly and end up injuring themselves or not hitting as hard as they could be because they don’t know any better. Mastering the basics is important, don’t try to build the attic if you haven’t even started the foundation.

  30. LOL He included the Stockton Slap
    I’m fuckin dead
Had to check the date of this shit
    Whew
That Hand trapping technique at #1 is probably the most important one of all. If you want to see these at the highest level of MMA, watch Fedor Emelianenko fuck people up with it.
You better be FAST AND STRONG with it or you WILL probably get rocked with a quick counter.

  31. I’ve had about three street fights in my life, each one ended with me right handering the guy into instant submission. A big right or left hook usually settles matters quickly, especially if the guy is a fucking pussy and is packing a knife he doesn’t know how to use or a gun he can’t shoot

  32. Most “Gangstas” are pampered mummy’s boys who are bitter about their father hating them so much that he left before he had a chance to beat their asses for their ridiculous behaviour. One shot aught to do it.

  33. The upward elbow block and elbow strike has many uses. Joseph Simonet’s You’re already dead: Surprise an Attacker with Counterattack Tactics video has great applications for this, he calls it the supported-elbow frame.

    1. Kru Yodtong Senanan shows it perfeclty here. 73 year old and you can imagine how it would hurt

  35. In regard to the UFC photo in section 1, “Oh…shit.”
That’s playing for keeps. I also like how picure one was a guy striking a woman.
Elbow strikes are big pimpin’, I should add.
Looking forward to part II. Nice article.

  36. My sensei always told me to run away whenever possible. But there are times when you can’t. In that situation, anything goes. Delivering a palm-heel strike isn’t easy but it is an effective move from close range as the arm travels upwards helped by a hip thrust. A hit under the jaw will work but under the nose is better, though that’s a smaller target. The blade of the hand smashed into the side of the neck (carotid artery) will finish an opponent too. They stagger round and fall over after being hit by one of those. A rabbit punch to the back of the neck can kill so be aware of what you’re doing. The only other advice I would give is be aware of your surroundings and don’t wander round drunk in areas you don’t know. Just using common sense has kept me safe and away from trouble for a long time.

  37. Some useful advice on self-defence from one of the more questionable places on mother earth.
When your get into a fight, be prepared, you will mostly be ALONE and receive no help from bystanders, know when to run and when to beat the living daylight out of your opponents.

  38. I agree 100% with the assertion that all decent males should be trained to fight from an early age. This topic means a lot to me as my own Golden Gloves boxer father never gave enough of a damn to train me to follow in his footsteps with boxing, or anything else.
    But this:
“You cannot say that you are a man if you cannot fight. As simple as that. If you fight better, you incidentally become a better man.”
Is the author implying that human sh*t stains like “War Machine” are “more of a man” than men like Thomas Edison, Isaac Newton, Galileo, Einstein, Fermi, Ford, Franklin, Pasteur, Salk, etc..?

  39. There’s nothing I love more than spanking some little bitch with a big mouth and bad manners…

  40. LMAOing at the fat f*ck in the first picture–this has to be a joke, right?
