How Meditation Saved My Life

I grew up in Philly, which set me on a track to live life fast. To survive, I learned the skill of being able to figure people out in a split second. I had to determine if the person I was interacting with wanted to knock my fucking teeth out or wanted to be my friend.

When it came to women, my guy friends in social settings would literally push me in front of a group of girls. This was so I would be the one starting the conversation and entertaining the girls. We all know girls love attention. So in a way, I was forced to learn game quickly and at a young age.

Oh, and I don’t want to forget about the street drugs. In addition to the sex, the drugs definitely increased my already rapid-pace lifestyle. The problem for me was that life was moving too quickly and had no real meaning. That all changed when I bought an old school book about meditation.

Keep It Simple

There was definitely a stigma attached to meditation with the peer group that I was hanging out with at the time. I kept it to myself when I began meditating, because anything like this was considered faggy to my friends. Meditation is a simple thing to do. There is no need to be in a dark setting or a quiet place.

Don’t complicate it, because you’ll be less likely to continue. No special breathing techniques are needed and neither are mantras. They will come naturally in time. Meditation should be something you look forward to doing. You don’t need to sit in any special way or be in any specific place, you just need to close your eyes and relax. Ambient music can really help you to clear your mind.

My favorite time to do it is when I first wake up, because I’m still in a dream state. Side note: if anyone ever tries to charge you for meditation, they are a scam artist. It’s a free practice and a personal journey.

Start by meditating for five minutes after waking up. New thoughts and ideas will start pouring into your mind. Eventually, with practice you will be able to meditate anywhere and at any time. It becomes highly enjoyable. As the saying goes, “as within, so without.” In order to have true enjoyment and fulfillment in life, your internal game needs to be tight too.

Tapping In

You are all you have in this life. Your appearance, finances, and socialization skills are all essential, but your internal world is even more important to get in check. Your body is just the cage for your soul or the world within. When you tap into this internal energy, you will also connect to a higher level of consciousnesses.

I was very skeptical at first, and it’s easy to believe that meditation is just some New Age bullshit. The more I meditated, the better I felt, so I realized quickly that I was on the right path. Meditation changes your perspective and will slow your life down. You will discover what is most meaningful to you. Interactions in your life will also improve. You will be living in the moment and feel more connected to others. You will gain confidence and your anxiety should decrease.

Sex becomes more of a sensual and erotic experience because you have slowed your mind down and your soul is guiding your body. Solving everyday problems becomes easier. I always go with the simple answer I get through meditation. They tend to be the right and most effective answers. Writing down these newfound answers in a notebook is beneficial. When rereading your notebook, you’ll be surprised by how many of those simple thoughts really improved your life.

When The Shit Hits The Fan

Last year, I was having trouble selling my condo. During this time, my girlfriend’s father had a heart attack and died. In the past, this would have been too much for me and I would have been completely overwhelmed.

By the way, my girlfriend’s father’s death was about me because I had to be there for the drama associated with it. I didn’t become some emotional pussy for my girlfriend: that is not what a woman needs. I stayed strong because I was able to gain the correct perspective by meditating. My strength calmed her and I was able to direct her and give her the proper guidance she needed. The following month, I sold my condo after the idea of making one cheap renovation came to me through meditation.

What I’ve Gained

Meditation has helped me visualize the external life I wanted. I determined what I desired from life, though what you want out of life will obviously likely be different. I now know that life never ends: all that happens is that my level of consciousness changes.

I haven’t done any hard drugs in years. My life no longer consists of quick, meaningless interactions. I now only surround myself with positive people that add value to my life. I cut out shitheads and downer-type people as soon as they reveal themselves. I truly tapped into what matters to me, and I hope through meditation, you can do the same.

  1. Edgar Cayce!!!
    The prophet himself!
I remember stories about him from when I was a kid.
There was a TV show back in the 70s, maybe called “Amazing Stories” or something like that? I remember one show about Edgar Cayce that shared a stpry about how he save a man’s life by curing a raging infection on the man’s leg. In a trance, he correctly diagnosed the infection being caused by a bite from a house spider, and prescribed “Oil of Smoke” (whatever that as) as a cure, using a poultice or something.
He also made many predictions as well. And had some “theories” about the Egyptian pyramids.
Prophet? Who knows. Different and somewhat cool guy?
    Almost certainly.

    1. Did some “googling”.
I think the TV show was “That’s Incredible”.
One of the hosts was Fran Tarkenton from the Minnesota Vikings.

    2. AUTOMATIC
The show was “In Search Of” narrated by old Mr. Spock himself after he became alcoholic and Star Trek ended.

    3. Am I the only one here willing to call BS on this psychobabble/nonsense? This is ROK, as in “for masculine men”, not some site for new-age knuckleheads. I wonder if meditation can help keep me from wanting to puke after reading this article – and some of the comments.

  2. Great article. I just started meditation 2 months ago and it’s already had a huge impact on me.
I highly recommend a free phone app called “Headspace” to help you get started. They have a free 10 day starter course that you can use to learn the basics.
They have paid plans after that but I didn’t sign up for them (no, I have no affiliation to the company).
As Ethan says, there is no reason to pay for courses as the journey is an interior one and only requires the willingness to try and and an open mind to explore yourself.
It’s truly life changing if you stick with it.
    Give it a shot.

  3. There needs to be a guide on meditation for people with frantic, noisy, overly analytical minds. Any time I’ve ever tried meditating in the past it left me feeling aggravated instead of relaxed because it’s impossible for me to empty my thoughts and just feel the present moment or whatever.

    1. not an expert, but as far as I know meditation is just to put your attention to something, I read once that the word in tibetan can be translated like ” to put the mind on something” I remember that the same book used a methaphor comparing the mind to a restless monkey. Anyway, the point of meditation is not to empty your mind of thoughts, in fact in buddhism thoughts are seeing as a sense, a sense with which we identified to much. When you meditate all you have to do is concentrate on your breathing, if the mind starts to move to your thoughts then all you have to do is to come back to your breathing and not blame yourself for getting distracted. After some time of doing this something strange happens, you still think about things but somehow you can distance yourself from your thoughts, I cannot find anyway better to express it. So just keep trying I guess, and of course if you got something really worrisome in your life is normal to not being able to put attention, after all if my eye sense sees a bear coming up to me its normal that is going to take all my mind attention.

    2. Try looking up Binural beats on youtube listen for about 1 to 2 hours everyday to calm that mind of yours

    3. Yes, that’s how it is in the beginning. I can tell it to you like this: when you meditate, it is similar to practicing good form when lifting weights. You develop results over time, and you develop better form over time. I haven’t had the racing mind in years, decades maybe – but when I read your comment I remembered how I struggled myself to quiet down my mind.
The only reason your analytical mind is so active -is habit. It’s not a PROBLEM, just a minor habit which normally helps you, and you just train yourself to turn it off sometimes. No pressure. Just say or think “shhh!” To yourself, as if it was another person speaking to you.

    4. It’s like anything. After time you get good at it (months). Just stay focus and keep bringing your mind back to your breathing. After a while, your mind will have little noise.
I try to meditate for 30 minutes day. If my mind is noisy, a good 60-120 minutes will silence it.

  4. The book ‘Raja Yoga’ by Swami Vivekananda is a good start to learn how to meditate and why meditation is beneficial. It is freely available for downloading on the net.

  5. The advice for those who have very noisy minds is “trust the process”. That is true, but what is the reason so many ways of meditating work, you ask?
    The scientific explanation?
When you concentrate on something (pretty much anything) for about 20 minutes you will trigger a “relaxation response”. And as you practise this happens more quickly
But your subconscious or conscious expectations and doubts can get in the way, slowing this down. That is the reason for the very important principle: Keep an Open Sky Mind (Be open to whatever is happening). Yes, even that migraine. To achieve this, remind yourself to simply accept what is happening right now in your meditation. Even the busy chattering monkey thoughts. And you do this again.
    And again.
    And again.
    And fucking again…..
And my god, I just got pissed at my boss again for what he said yesterday!!!! FUCK!!
    and again…
For the time you have set.
So you do not get around making the time, having the discipline to stick to it. Accept the failure which is inevitable (Red Pill, right?) but continue.
The counter to the frustration that arises. (yes, cupcake, suck it up and Alpha down on doing this simple and stupidly hard shit.) Is just do it again and notice.
    And that can be done.
And in time, you will meditate, hit a surge of happiness for no bloody reason, and people will tell you: You have an incredibly positive air about you today.
If she is hot, you calibrate, run your game, and get her number without giving it a second thought.
When you date perhaps you may even make love to her meditatively, delaying that orgasm for you and her, completely in the moment, and she will tell you: I never had a lover like that.
And that would be Tantra Yoga.
But do not think you can pay for a 10 day course and be Buddha Red Pill in 10 days.
I have only once had the experience of complete relaxation to the point where there was no active thought, just awareness. I was 14, I am now 58.

  6. Try this one on Youtube which I found very effective. Came across it on the meditation subreddit, which can be very informative if you just filter the well meaning trolls who tell you if you don’t aspire to being Buddha 2018.0 you ain’t worth shit.
    Ignore them.

      1. The title of the video is Samahi – Guided Meditation #1- Breath as the bridge
It also explains meditation specific terms while you meditate, explaining the difference between a sensation, a feeling, a thought, and an emotion. The channel is AwakenTheWorld. It is part of a series and should be a very good introduction to meditationspeak.

  7. For ROK Christians
    Meditation is NOT Prayer.
The idea that you can “travel the ethereal cosmos” by sitting cross legged in your decrepit apartment is false.
If anything you fall somewhere between Vanity “I am able to project my astral self into the girls locker room” and Demonic Influence “I am godlike and can see, feel, and explore the chakral plane”
Drugs, alcohol, and meditation are related ‘escapist’ notions.
eg; “Life is too boring so weird behavior and thinking will spice it up!”
If you cannot walk down the street in awareness of who you are and in respect of your God-given gifts then you are literally doomed.

      1. Out of context
He was sent to assess Transcendental Meditation for purposes of Talent Spotting influential people. The purpose was potential recruiting of Sources and Agents of Influence. For which you look for people who are vulnerable in some way already. His contempt is for the Maharishi, who runs a business and sells the promise of Enlightenment, so yes, a sham.
Does not the church monetise the fear of damnation by demanding tithes?
        What does that make it?
His contempt is also because meditation is apolitical. Agitprop is utterly political.
The relaxation response is biological, thereby allowing controlling the fight or flight response when it is triggered inappropriately. It is proven to exist in research. Feelings of joy are due to the release of endorphins.
In terms of alleviating neuroses the proven and experienced ability to exert control over emotions and the body help building a habit of confidence. Which is an Alpha trait, right? And the basis of the manosphere.
Did he express contempt for the Dalai Lama or Buddha?

    1. Wyatt Rights- You win the buzzkill award this time. Christianity has meditative traditions too.

    2. The idea that you can gain salvation by visiting a church and having a probable child abuser explain to you what you should feel and do and then leave all this behind in everyday life means you are literally doomed too. The meek shall inherit the Earth, not the Alpha, last I heard.
I see no difference between sitting in a room and sitting in a church, as neither places are where the Lord is likely to dwell.
You imply Depression is my god given gift, it fucks with my awareness of who I am and my self respect and meditation helps, prayer does not. So excuse me if I do not invite the Lord to share my dinner. He did not give me my bread, I paid for it.

  8. Good article, thanks for posting. I would also recommend Wim Hof breathing method, and I’m talking about just the breathing, not the cold showers nor climbing Mt. Everest in one’s gym shorts.
The breathing excercizing alone (3 rounds every morning) is easily done and takes less than 10 minutes – doing this on a regular basis daily has a cumulative effect over time. There are tons of videos on youtube to learn this technique quickly.

  9. Wyatt Rights: Not quite!
Meditation is a technique, and there is a tradition of contemplative and meditational Prayer called the orison.
And unfortunately I have distressing news for you:
The catholic system of praying a rosary for instance is an extended form of reciting mantras in the form of a prayer. Done meditationally, I would use it to remind me of and meditate on the virtues of being christian as found in the lords prayer, should I so choose.
Catholicism for instance, which is the mother church of many other christian faiths, has many ritual techniques which are founded on common magickal principles. Chanting, repetition, incense, purification of the intent (blessing through consecration, for instance)
So it does not do to shout damnation and brimstone without looking at the intent.
A rifle can be used to kill, to put food on the table, and to defend yourself, after all.
My meditation has yet to kill me, and as a sufferer from Depression I have found the occasional break from despair through a surge of bliss quite welcome.
I might even be around to write this just because of that.

  10. I meditate on my commute to and from work everyday. No phone calls, no music playing , just road hum and miles going by. I sometime have moments of clarity and have to stop to send important messages or make phone calls when specific enlightenment happens. But those miles and minutes are mine and mine alone as I wish to use them. Works for me. Ive pretty much sworn off the electronic static and noise of technology that clouds the mind. I save that for my workplace. I try to focus my time away from work on getting necessary tasks completed at home and elsewhere, and keep my gym time focus solely on the gym and the exercises there. Sometimes my work accidentally drops moments of clarity too.
